“The minute she turned the corner, the whole room lit up. It was electric.”

This patent leather balmacaan debuted on the Spring 1991 runway, worn by supermodel Cindy Crawford.

Designed in a striking shade of scarlet with a lustrous finish, its dramatic impact is balanced by the simplicity of its timeless, menswear-inspired silhouette. He cited at the time Audrey Hepburn’s style in the sixties as an influence for the piece, saying “It was a very cool, calm, detached style... dressed up and glamorous, but without looking fussy or overdone.” For his 40th anniversary show, Michael sent modern muse Bella Hadid down the runway in a new version of the coat, honoring the next generation of fashion icons.

Michael has long believed that a singular piece of outerwear can change your entire look. “A coat is like your calling card,” he explains. “You can throw on a fabulous coat and what’s underneath it is instantly transformed.” With its “just slip-into-it-and-go feeling,” this balmacaan is clearly one for the ages.

The MK40 Reissue Capsule features a special curation of iconic pieces from seasons past that Michael has recreated for today.
